Pilar, 19
Coron Island, Philippines Pilar was camping by a cave which contains the swallow's nests used in bird's nest soup. The cave has been in her family for several generations. Since the nests can fetch up to $10,000 per kilo in China, Pilar will be guarding the cave night and day for the entire nesting season - almost 4 months. In a good year she will collect 1/3 kilo from the cave and receive $750 from the Chinese trader. Even though Bird's nest soup is believed to have many health benefits, her family no longer drinks it - it's just too valuable.
