Norenco, 50+
Signapan Basin, Philippines Norenco, the shaman of the Tau't Batu, was treating a feverish young child when I arrived. He told the father to make an offering to the mountain spirit in the place where the father had cut down and burned some trees. Norenco said it was this spirit that was causing the baby's problems. The Tau't Batu, who live in caves on the side of high cliffs, were just discovered in 1978. Their belief demands that nature be compensated with a carved wooden replica of any animals they've killed.
