Bessie Cly
Canyonlands, Utah Bessie comes from a long line of successful Navajo silversmiths. I met her and her family outside Canyonlands National Park, where they sell their jewelry to visiting tourists. The Navajo learned the craft from Spanish silversmiths along the Rio Grande in the mid-1800s. For years they were content to make the jewelry for their own adornment until Anglo-Americans discovered their jewelry in the early 1920s. Navajo Collection: Spirit of Place - N.
