Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia During the Soviet control of Mongolia, all but four of the country's seven hundred Tibetan monasteries were destroyed, and over 100,000 Tibetan Lamas were either executed or went underground. As a young monk, Manalsuren was forcibly conscripted into the Soviet-controlled Mongolian Army. He is now one of over 1000 Tibetan Lamas who have "reappeared" in Mongolia since the fall of the Soviet Empire.
