Chahuatire, Peru Several families were working in their communal potato field when I arrived at Leonarda’s small village. Although only four, she has the responsibility of herding the sheep. Cultivating, cooking and home construction are done collectively in most Quechua communities. Even children who have just learned to walk can be seen helping in the fields by chasing birds away and covering the newly planted seeds.
