Iparo, 85
Maralal, Kenya The earrings that Iparo wears indicate that all 12 of her children--boys and girls--have completed their circumcision ceremony. Her last child was born when she was 61. A recent widow, she had just been forced to leave her home because of violent cattle raids between the tribes in her territory. The raids have recently become deadly because of drought and the introduction of AK-47s into the area.
