Echuka 24, Eragai 21
Baragoi, Kenya Less than one month before, cattle raiders from the Sudan had come very close to Echuka and Eragai’s small group of huts, or manyatta. Fearing for their lives, the two women took their children and ran out into the desert, hiding all night. In the last three years, Sudanese raiders armed with AK-47s have killed thousands of the Turkana in order to steal their cattle. Because the Turkana territory is so remote, this ongoing tragedy has scarcely provoked any international protest or publicity.
