Epius 27, Wele 45
Pit River, Irian Jaya Epius and Wele put on their warrior attire when they saw me taking photographs and handing out Polaroids. Normally they only dress up for celebrations or to fight. Epius is from a village in Illaga, which is several days’ walk away. He had come to Pit River for an education and had just graduated from high school. Since no jobs are available, he plans to return to his village to help settle a conflict with a neighboring tribe.
