Lena, 9
Tana Toraja, Indonesia Lena comes from a family of six children; however, only she and her four-year-old sister remain at home. Her older brothers have all left Tana Toraja to seek employment in the larger cities of Indonesia--a typical pattern for Toraja’s young people since the late 1960s. In a society where family continuity and closeness are still intensely valued, this departure of a whole generation of youth has been quite devastating.
