Silbo, 17
Dimeka, Ethiopia Silbo had spent the day at the market inviting friends to his bullah, a ceremony initiating him into warriorhood which would take place in three weeks. Before the ceremony, female guests will beg to be whipped by young warriors to show their support for Silbo’s initiation. Silbo must run across the backs of 30 bulls four times. If he falls, he himself will be whipped, as will his mother for not feeding him properly.
