Gambino, 10
Konso, Ethiopia Gambino is an orphan who lost his mother to malaria two years ago. As a result, he is homeless and looks for odd jobs in order to feed himself. I was told that he showed such a strong desire to go to school that the director has allowed him to attend for free. As I took his photo, a crowd of children gathered and watched intently. Three weeks later, when I passed through his little town, I was met by kids chanting, “Gambino! Gambino! Gambino!” He was now a celebrity.
