Hu Jun Di’s place in Chinese and western art

At the very beginning of the western art spreading to China, it was looked down upon by the feudalistic governor. But after the wars, the feudalistic governor thought western technology and culture were more developed than China, so the western art was worshiped strongly. The realistic skill was popular and welcome even in the Chinese painting. This is when western art won the main position in Chinese art. Since that time, even thought the people emphasize “race” and “character” etc, the people still think the more western is the more modern. Because of this social circumstance, Hu Jundi’s work becomes more special.

Hu Jundi’s works are oil, but his oil paintings are controlled by the eastern special art tradition. It shows what the artist thinks and understands. He understands western art well, but Hu’s painting language is completely Chinese. These oil paintings are different from the oil paintings that we often see; they are very thin, but they are not described with delicate touch, it is another special skill, the special Chinese painting technique. So when we first see these paintings, we feel the combination of the light, color and flow of the east, and the shadow of the west. We have seen Chen Yifei’s work described as the epitome of east meets west, but his technique is purely western. Hu Jundi’s paintings, I believe are the first to brilliantly melt the two cultures together with a complete integrity.
