Colin Poole
Colin Poole is a painter and a sculptor based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His work is widely diverse, ranging from high detailed to painterly realism. He primarily works in oils, infusing his luminous paintings with richness and depth. Poole’s figurative bronze sculptures are evocative of dance, motion, and music.
Poole can often be found working outdoors on location, these plein-air paintings are completed in one sitting, or ‘alla prima’ in favorite locations such as Greece, Italy, France, Spain and the American Southwest. Although these works are imbued with their own energy and vitality they are also the basis for his larger studio works.
The experience of traveling; absorbing a new setting, culture, scenery and quality of light are essential to conveying emotion in the work. These paintings are done quickly and all at once by necessity-- each captures a particular moment in time while the light changes rapidly.
Poole’s Santa Fe studio is in a picturesque pueblo style adobe house, nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains that once belonged to his grandmother, the internationally known Una Handbury. The studio is alive with the soft cooing of Poole’s collection of over sixty rare breeds of pigeons from all over the world that roost above his studio skylights and the roaring of his Mexican antique fireplace.
Influencing both the canvas and dimensional bronze work, his wide range and studied diversity is one of his greatest strengths and one collectors find refreshing. Poole has developed incredibly strong technique in a variety of media and styles, which allows him to manifest his numerous and varied creative visions with great success.
